Construction requirements in Canada are set and enforced provincially. Use the authority for the property's own jurisdiction — never assume one province's rule applies nationally.
Who regulates construction and permits for a Canadian home?
Canada publishes model construction codes nationally, but each province and territory adopts and amends them, and permits are usually issued by municipalities or accredited agencies. Electrical and gas safety is often handled by a separate provincial authority. To research a specific home, request records from the municipality and the provincial authority that covers that address.
Jurisdiction hubs
- AlbertaAlberta administers construction safety through the Safety Codes Act, the Safety Codes Council, and accredited municipalities and agencies. Edmonton and Calgary each maintain their own permit search services, which is usually the fastest route to a documented history for a specific address.
- OntarioOntario has unusually clear separation between building, electrical and fuels oversight, which means three separate record requests can produce a fuller documented history than most provinces.
