    Most 1800s properties relied on dug wells and cesspools rather than municipal services. Cesspools were simply pits lined with stone — they leach directly into groundwater. If the property still uses a well, test for coliform bacteria, nitrates, arsenic (common in Ontario granite regions), and radon in water. Decommissioned cesspools can cause ground subsidence.

Water infiltrates gaps, runs inside the wall cavity, and rots the bottom plates and sill. This is particularly severe on west- and north-facing walls. Modern repair requires full siding removal, installation of weather-resistant barrier, and often replacement of rot-damaged framing.

Only testing establishes what is present. Sanding, sawing, or heating any painted surface during renovation creates hazardous lead dust. Children under 6 and pregnant women face the greatest neurological risk.
