Researching an older home in Alberta

Alberta administers construction safety through the Safety Codes Act, the Safety Codes Council, and accredited municipalities and agencies. Edmonton and Calgary each maintain their own permit search services, which is usually the fastest route to a documented history for a specific address.

A research workflow for a specific address

    1. 1Request the municipal property file or permit search for the address (Edmonton and Calgary both offer online services).
    2. 2Ask which permits exist for electrical, gas, plumbing and building work, and what year each was issued.
    3. 3Where records are incomplete, treat the gap as unknown — not as evidence that a material or system is or is not present.
    4. 4For plumbing-material questions on a specific Edmonton or Calgary property, have a licensed plumber identify the material at the meter, in the basement and at fixtures, and ask the municipal water utility for the service-line material record.
    5. 5For heating appliances, request the gas permit record and the appliance service history by make, model and serial number.

This is a records workflow, not a diagnosis. Materials and system types must be confirmed on site by a qualified professional.
