Canadian homes built 1940–1959
The first National Building Code of Canada appeared in 1941 and CMHC financing standardised much of the housing built for returning veterans and rapid suburban growth. Plans repeat across whole neighbourhoods, which makes comparable-street research unusually useful.
What should you know about a Canadian home built 1940–1959?
Post-war Canadian housing was built quickly to standardised plans, often with 60-amp electrical service, galvanized or copper supply piping, oil or early gas forced-air heating, and asbestos-containing products in flooring, siding and mechanical insulation. Era association is not a finding: what a particular house still contains depends on later renovations that records and inspection must confirm.
